Hardy, Thomas. Works. http://www.online-literature.com/hardy/. 1872 Hardy, Thomas. Under the greenwood tree : a rural painting of the Dutch school. (London : Tinsley Brothers, 1872). Dame the tenth : the honourable Lara. Chap. 7 "Before the words were half out of his mouth the old gentleman had exclaimed, 'Ah!' and precipitated himself along what seemed to be the passage to the kitchen; but as this turned out to be only the entrance to a dark china-closet, he hastily emerged again, after a collision with the inn-crockery had told him of his mistake." 1874 Hardy, Thomas. Far from the madding crowd. (London : Smith, Elder, 1874). Chap. 24 "And, he was brought up so well, and sent to Casterbridge Grammar School for years and years. Learnt all languages while he was there; and it was said he got on so far that he could take down Chinese in shorthand ; but that I don't answer for, as it was only reported." Chap. 44 "Liddy vanished, and at the end of twenty minutes returned with a cloak, hat, some slices of bread and butter, a tea-cup, and some hot tea in a little china jug." 1876 Hardy, Thomas. The hand of Ethelberta. (London : Smith, Elder & Co., 1875-1876). Chap. 20 "That she had not the slightest notion of accepting the impulsive painter made little difference; a lover's arguments being apt to affect a lady's mood as much by measure as by weight. A useless declaration like a rare china teacup with a hole in it, has its ornamental value in enlarging a collection." 1878 Hardy, Thomas. The return of the native. (London : Smith, Elder & Co., 1878). 6. A conjuncture. "She drew from the small willow reticule that she carried in her hand an old-fashioned china teacup without a handle; it was one of half a dozen of the same sort lying in the reticule, which she had preserved ever since her childhood, and had brought with her today as a small present for Clym and Eustacia." 1880 Hardy, Thomas. The trumpet major : a tale. (London : Smith, Elder, & Co., 1880). Chap. 17 "Indoors, Miss Johnson admired everything: the new parrots and marmosets, the black beams of the ceiling, the double-corner cupboard with the glass doors, through which gleamed the remainders of sundry china sets acquired by Bob's mother in her housekeeping-- two-handled sugar-basins, no-handled tea-cups, a tea-pot like a pagoda, and a cream-jug in the form of a spotted cow." 1881 Hardy, Thomas. A laodicean ; or, The castle of the De Stancys : a story of to-day, etc. (London : S. Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1881). Chap. 12 "It was an old stock enough, though not a rich one. His great-uncle had been the well-known Vice-admiral Sir Armstrong Somerset, who served his country well in the Baltic, the Indies, China, and the Caribbean Sea." 1883 Hardy, Thomas. The romantic adventures of a milkmaid. (New York, Harper & Brothers, 1883). Chap. 7 "Pair of silver candlesticks: inlaid work-table and work-box: one large mirror: two small ditto: one gilt china tea and coffee service: one silver tea-pot, coffee-pot, sugar-basin, jug, and dozen spoons: French clock: pair of curtains: six large pictures." 1886 Hardy, Thomas. The mayor of Casterbridge : the life and death of a man of character. (London : Smith, Elder, & Co., 1886). Chap. 11 "I have to be away for a day or two on business, unfortunately; but during that time you can get lodgings--the only ones in the town fit for you are those over the china-shop in High Street--and you can also look for a cottage." 1887 Hardy, Thomas. The woodlanders. (London : Macmillan, 1887). Chap. 7 "His companions were timber-dealers, yeomen, farmers, villagers, and others ; mostly woodland men, who on that account could afford to be curious in their walking-sticks, which consequently exhibited various monstrosities of vegetation, the chief being cork-screw shapes in black and white thorn, brought to that pattern by the slow torture of an encircling woodbine during their growth, as the Chinese have been said to mould human beings into grotesque toys by continued compression in infancy." 1891 Hardy, Thomas. Tess of the d’Urbervilles. (London : James R. Osgood, McIlvaine and Co., 1891). Chap. 10 "All looked at Car. Her gown was a light cotton print, and from the back of her head a kind of rope could be seen descending to some distance below her waist, like a Chinaman's queue." 1892 Hardy, Thomas. The pursuit of the well-beloved : a sketch of a temperament. (London : Illustrated London News, 1892). I. "There were Chinese lanterns, too, on the balcony." VI. "The room was less furnished than when he had last beheld it. The 'bo-fet,' or double corner-cupboard, where the china was formerly kept, had disappeared, its place being taken by a plain board." 1894-1895 Hardy, Thomas. Jude the obscure. In : Harper's magazine (1894-1895). = The Simpletons. Chap. 5 "Perhaps I can pick up a cheap bit of furniture or old china." 1898 Hardy, Thomas. Wessex poems and other verses. (London : Harper, 1898). "If ye break my best blue china, children, I shan't care or ho." 1903 Hardy, Thomas. The dynasts : a drama of the Napoleonic wars. In three parts, nineteen acts, & one hundred and thirty scenes. (London : Macmillan, 1903). Act first "Travelling carriages, teams, and waggons, laden with pictures, carpets, glass, silver, china, and fashionable attire, are rolling out of the city, followed by foot-passengers in streams, who carry their most precious possessions on their shoulders." |

Lanmu, Cha'ersi [Lamb, Charles]. Yingguo shi ren yin bian yan yu [ID D10417]. Lin Shu's translation of Tales from Shakespeare contains twenty stories based on the Bard's plays, it was the second earliest introduction of Shakespearean works into China. Lin Shu schreibt im Vorwort : "When the Europeans criticize our country, they usually say that China is becoming increasingly weak and ill-fated because she is narrow in her view of the world, outdated in her thinking, allowing her past to dominate her present, and too fond of gods, fairies, ghosts, and demons. The young and audacious in our country are going all out for reform and change. They embrace only the new, mocking the old tradition and practice and discarding past history and heritage. There are certainly justifications in what these people are doing. But, if they think that all things Western are new to China, they are wrong, for it would be like glorifying somebody by exaggerating his merits or destroying somebody by magnifying his faults. Aren't Hardy and Shakespeare literary giants of the great civilized England ? Look at Hardy's books that I have translated ; there are taboo snakes and condemned ghosts all over the place. Shakespeare's poetry is quite comparable to that of our [great poet] Du Fu, but he often conjures up images of gods, fairies, ghosts, and demons. If the Westerners are so civilized, then maybe these works mentioned should be banned and burned so as not to interfere with scientific knowledge. As far as I know, however, Shakespeare's poetry is held in high esteem among the well bred [in the West]. There his works are not only read and recited in every household but also performed in theaters, where men and women are moved to tears as they hold each other's hands listening to every word, where no one is ever tempted to call him old-fashioned or accuse him of having a fetish about gods, fairies, ghosts, and demons. Why is this the case ? Certainly, many old things are useless today, for example, the cooking vessels and drinking cups from the Bronze Age, heavy and rust eaten. But no expense should be spared to obtain, preserve, and display, say, a distinguished suit of armor once worn by a great personage from an illustrious family. People who are affluent and not troubled by the material needs of everyday life turn their interest to the past in pursuit of new personal enrichment. This is just like what [Su] Dongpo said, that when one has had enough rich meats and fine grains he starts to miss the snails and clams [of the old days]. Running a country and educating its people are two important matters that do not depend on arts and literature. When all is well with the country and its people, good arts and literature can add more luster; but when good arts and literature is all a country has, they do not benefit either the governing or educating. That's why the Westerners make government and education their priorities, gathering wealth and building military strength. They are so rich and powerful that no outsiders dare to humiliate them. It is only then they begin to enjoy arts and literature in their leisure time. Maybe Mr. Hardy and Mr. Shakespeare are old-fashioned and using gods, fairies, ghosts, and demons too much, but the civilized Westerners are certainly not complaining. I am old, and I do not use the same language as Hardy and Shakespeare, but I am particularly fond of these two gentlemen's works. My good friend Mr. Wei Chunshu, from Renhe [Hangzhou, Zhejiang] —young, erudite, and a master of Western languages—and I teamed up to do translations at the Translation Studio of the Jingshi Daxuetang (Capital University). After Mr. Wei orally translated the works to me, I put them into [Chinese] literary form. In about two years we translated about three or four works, of which the most massive one is the Biography of Napoleon. We are about to graduate from the studio early this coming autumn. When free one night, Mr. Wei picked up some Shakespeare by chance; I started scribbling away by the night lamp. Twenty days later we have a book of Shakespeare's poetic tales. The British certainly embrace new ideas in running their country, but they do not discard Shakespeare's poetry. Now that I have translated the book of Shakespeare's poetic tales, won't those blievers in new things reject it ? There are some different versions of Shakespeare's poetic tales coming into our country. There are similarities and differences in the selections of tales as well as in the contents of actual tales themselves. My book contains bwenty tales, each of which has a new title by me for the purpose of highlighting." Tian Han schreibt : "The novels translated by Lin Qinnan [Lin Shu] were very popular then and they were also my favourite type of publication. I was really interested in Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare which was translated als 'English poet, reciting from afar on joyous occasions'. I've been unconsciously influenced by this book. I read The tempest, Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet in the originals when I grew up, but it seemed to me that Lin's way of telling these stories as fairy tales was more appealing." Li Ruru : Lin Shu adapted his Tales into Chinese. Taking the extract quoted earlier as an example, his version, compared to the original account by the Lambs, is tinged with more personal feelings evoked through the use of dialogue. His style is influenced by traditional Chinese story telling, which alternates freely and frequently between firs-person expression and third-person narration and commentary. |

Xu Zhimo hält Vorlesungen über modern englische Literatur an der Nankai-Universität. Xu regarded Thomas Hardy as "a completely negative and extremely pessimistic novelist and poet". |
|

Xu Zhimo besucht Thomas Hardy. Xu had a brief discussion with Hardy on Chinese poetry and the importance of metrics. Hardy’s argument on the indispensability of metrical rules to poetry inspired Xu to seriously reconsider his poetic outlook, resulting in a shift from the free-verse style that dominated his first collection ofpoetry (Poems of Zhimo 1925) and this poetic reorientation is seen clarly in his second collection (Feilengcui di yi ye 1927), and continued will into his third and fourth collections. Hardy asked Xu : "You’ve translated my poems ? How did you do that ? Is Chinese poetry metrical ?" Xu : "I told him that we used to have only metrical poetry and no such thing as blank verse, but recently… He [Hardy] interrupted me, saying he was in favor of metrical poetry, which was correct by principle. You throw a piece of stone into the lake and ripples spread out in circles. And metrics are the ripples which you cannot forgot… I told him that I liked his poems because they not only have a tight architectural structure but also have veins of thoughts flowing through like an organic whole…" "Yes, organic, yes, organic. A poem ought to be a living thing". |

Xu, Zhimo. Tang mai shi Hadai [ID D27729]. Er schreibt : "With his four novels (Jude the obscure, Tess oft he D'Urbervilles, The return oft he native, Far from the madding world) alone, Hardy has secured a lofty status in the literary world comparable to Shakespeare and Balzac. In the history of English literature, Hamlet and Jude the obscure stand out like two fiery trees shining on each other. A large amount of good writings has indeed been produced in the three centuries in between, yet none of them measures up to these two poles which will give off their sacred sheen forever in the realm of literature and art." "Hardy is not an arbitrary pessimist though he could not check his anger and melancholy sometimes. He never gave up his resolve to seek a way out for his personal ideal and the prospects of humanity as well, even during the darkest and most tiresome hours of his life. His realism and his pessimism reflect exactly his mental faithfulness and bravery." "The act of imagination is the starting-point for the creation of a universe. But only a select few, possessed of 'complete imagination' or 'absolute imagination', have the capacity to create a complete universe : Shakespeare, for example, or Goethe or Dante. Hardy's universe also is a whole. If some should suggest that in that universe the climatic variation was altogether too monotonous, the aspect always that of autumnal or wintry gloom, that no gay blaze of the sun ever came bursting through the clouds and mists, then Hardy's answer would be that the age he represented was not, unfortunately, that of Elizabeth I, but that era of the fullest development of self-consciousness which began with the closing years of the nineteenth century : a most stern season in the history of man... Even in the moments of the greatest distress, the blackest darkness, Hardy never abandoned his determination to find a way out for his thinking, to find a way out for the future of mankind. His realism, his so-called pessimism, are names for nothing but the honesty and courage of his thought." "No one else could gauge as closely as Hardy the pulse-beat of his age ; under his fingers the slightest movement was made to divulge its inner secret. The death of Thomas Hardy properly concludes an important historical era. The era opens with the thinking and the character of Rousseau, in whose words and deeds there was realized the formal birth of the 'liberation of the self' and the 'consciousness of the self' of the modern age. From the Confessions to the French Revolution, from the French Revolution to the Romantic movement, from the Romantic movement to Nietzsche (and Dostojevsky), from Nietzsche to Hardy – through this hundred-and-seventy-year span we watch the struggles of human feeling as it emerges from the grip of Reason, bursting forth like flame, and in the bright blaze shooting out its various movements and doctrines, meanwhile in the embers nourishing the 'modern consciousness', pathological, self-analytical, questioning, weary ; and even as the flying sparks diminish, so does the heap of ashes beneath broaden out until a sense of disillusionment tones down all the throbbings of energy, crushes feeling, paralyzes intellect, and mankind suddenly discovers that its footsteps have strayed to the brink of despair, that if it does not hold back then the future offers only death and silence. When Hardy began the writing of his novels the days of Victoria were at their most flourishing, the indications of evolutionary theory and the achievements of the doctrine of laissez-faire had thrown up a high tide of optimism which within a short time blotted out all inequalities and mysteries. By the time he ceased writing fiction a fin-de-siècle melancholy had replaced the hollow hopes of the early years. When Hardy first published a volume of his verse the forces of destruction, gathering for a century past, had formed a hidden current which might at any moment burst its banks. As he was publishing his later volumes this current broke out in the Great War and the Russian Revolution." |

Chang, Hsin-hai [Zhang, Xinhai]. A Chinese estimate of Hardy's poetry [ID D27877]. "Poetry heightens our appreciation of beauty through its appeal to the imagination and to the emotions, and Hardy's poetry seems to offer us very little delight in these realms. The fact is, not that Hardy fails to give us an imaginative or emotional appeal, but the quality of his imagination and emotion is different from the usual kind. It is charged with profound intellectual significance… There is thus ample reason why Hardy's poetry will perhaps remain unpopular, but for those who have deep intellectual interests and who are willing to see human existence in crude and barbarous realism without the sweetness and the glamour which some of us in all times and all of us in some time find necessary to humour ourselves, there is very adequate compensation in the fair collection of poetry which Hardy has given us… The leading and, at the same time, the most characteristic thought underlying all of Hardy's works is that life is a tragedy, and that it is a tragedy because of the eternal and inevitable conflict between the human will on the one hand and the immanent will on the other. We shall therefore consider what Hardy means by destiny or fate which underlies all human existence, and its relationship to his religious views and his general philosophic outlook upon life… Hardy is one of the greatest of our modern poets, because in him more than in anyone else are reflected the manifold aspects of our modern consciousness. Hardy is, if anything, fundamental ; and if he seems to emphasise misery and suffering, it is because they are the great realities of our modern existence. We should be grateful to have one reveal to us the truth of our being, but it perhaps requires a still greater soul to exalt and ennoble it. Hardy, in any case, is among the immortals of English literature." |

Liang, Shiqiu. Tan Xu Zhimo [ID D27730]. Er schreibt : "A dominant feature of Thomas Hardy’s short poems is that they open with some minor scenarios in a rather simple tone but conclude with a tragic irony and this skill is picked up and successfully applied by Xu Zhimo to some of his poems." |

Lu, Weiping. Thomas Hardy and Xu Zhimo : a study of poetic influence [ID D27731]. Thomas Hardy's fiction has had a remarkably strong appeal for general readers for decades, and draws increasingly provocative attention from academic readers. His poetry more recently has come to acclaim as among the most influential of the twentieth century. Hardy wrote poetry for nearly sixty years. Xu Zhimo never thought of being a poet before he went abroad to study. When attending history classes in America, he was gradually shaping a specific picture about the industry of the nineteenth century and the workers' suffering life. He abandoned his former idea of "saving the nation by industry development," but began to hate the industrialized civilization. His life experience in Cambridge University cultivated him as a poet, a pioneer in Chinese modern poetry movement.Though lots of research has been done on Thomas Hardy and Xu Zhimo respectively, scholars usually focus their study on one of them instead of bringing them together to make a comparative study, or a few of them do make the comparison between Hardy and Xu, but mainly study Xu and use Hardy as a comparison other to make Chinese readers learn Xu more specifically. Hardy influenced Xu's creation and how he influenced Chinese modern new poetry creation through exerting influence on Xu's poetic career. |
