1 1927 Zheng, Zhenduo.
Zheng alluded to William Dean Howells' famous appellation for Mark Twain as 'the Lincoln of American literature'. He asserts that Huckleberry Finn is Twain's most important representative work.
He described Georg Brandes as 'the most important critic of Europe'.
Zheng mentioned Jane Austen, but said very briefly that her works have calm irony, delicate characterization, and pleasing style.
Washington Irving made American literature first recognized in Europe, while it is Edgar Allan Poe who first made American literature greatly influence European literature. In 1909, the year of Poe's centennial, the whole of Europe, from London to Moscow, and from Christiania to Rome, claimed its indebtedness to Poe and praised his great success.
Zheng Zhenduo regarded Nathaniel Hawthorne as "the first person who wrote tragedy in America". It was Hawthorne's emphasis upon psychological description that led to Zheng's high praise. According to Zheng's theory, the American tradition in literature exerted a strong influence upon Hawthorne's exploration of the depth of the human soul. "Hawthorne's psychological description could be traced back to Charles Brown."
2 1934-2000 James Fenimore Cooper and China : general
Zhang Aiping : Cooper's picturesque description of American landscape and realistic characterization of American frontiersmen instantly turned him into a popular American writer among Chinese readers and critics as well. Scholarly articles on Cooper have appeared not just in mainstream or specialized journals of the study of American literatury, they can also be found in a variety of non-literary magazines and journals. Common readers know Cooper as the American novelist who wrote extensively and beautifully about adventures in the wilderness, whereas scholars view him as the leader in American Renaissance literature, who established several new genres in American novel writing. In textbooks and scholarly writings, they lauded him as the pioneering figure who helped steer American writings out of the shadow of the British and European traditions and create a nationa literature for America.
3 1988 Mao, Xinde. Meiguo xiao shuo shi gang.
Mao is discussing James Fenimore Cooper's three major contributions to American novel writing : 1) Breaking new and broad ground for the American novel writing ; 2) Establishing the Cooperian romantic style in novel writing ; 3) Integrating closely novel writing with the development of his time.
4 1996 Zeng, Yanju. [The thematic variation of the American dream and the pursuit of the dream by generations of American writers].
Zeng called James Fenimore Cooper one of the first explorer of the 'American dream' and regarded the Natty Bumppo in The Pioneers who 'had gone far towards the setting sun – the foremost in that band of pioneers who are opening the way for the march of the nation across the continent, as the archetypal hero of the 'Myth of America'.
5 1999 Yao, Bengbiao. [A brief introduction to American romantic novel].
Yao wrote in his article 'Led by pioneering authors like Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper, American literature ended its dependence on British and European tradition and produced various works with its own unique national characteristics at the beginning of the 19th century, thus freeing itself from the colonial conventions and segging itself on the cours of fresh prosperty'.
