4 1623 Entdeckung der Stele in Xi'an (Shaanxi) von 781, des Beweises dafür, dass das Christentum (Nestorianismus) schon früher in China existierte. Alvaro Semedo wird nach Xi'an geschickt. Er ist der erste Europäer, der die Stele zu Gesicht bekommt. Die Frontseite enthält 1800 Schriftzeichen. Johannes Schreck entziffert die Namen von 62 Priestern und eines Bischofs einer nestorianischen Gemeinde.
