Poivre schreibt : "China bietet ein hinreissendes Bild dessen, was aus dem ganzen Erdball zu werden vermöchte, wenn die Gesetzte dieses Reiches die Gesetze aller Völker würden. Geht nach Peking ! Bestaunt den Mächtigsten der Sterblichen, er ist das wahre, das vollkommene Bild des Himmels."
"Cette grande nation agricole réunit à l'ombre de son agriculture, fondée sur une liberté raisonnable, tous les advantages différents des peuples policés et de ceux qui sont sauvages."

Basil Guy : The work is based upon extensive journey which Poivre undertook in the Far East during the years 1740-1756. Among other things, China is referred as the happiest and best organized country in the world, because from time immemorial its government was founded upon laws which are an expression of nature's modes of operating and which are rooted in the human heart. In conformity with this, its wise government had, in particular, lent support to agriculture as the most important of all practical pursuits.
