Clarc schreibt : "A la Chine une mère n'aime pas son fils parce qu'on lui a dit qu'il faut l'aimer, elle le chérit heureusement malgré elle ; elle regarde le soin de sa nourriture comme un devoir sacré, et celui de son éducation comme le complément de tous ses devoirs. Aussi la mère de Confucius se garda bien d'étouffer son lait, elle en fit l'usage préscrit par la nature en nourrissant le gage de sa tendresse."
"[Emperor] Yu le Grand se conduisit d'après ces principes [de bons princes], d'où depend la félicité de ceux qui commandent et de ceux qui obéissent : un prince vertueux peut tout ; son exemple est le prototype des moeurs de sa nation. Yu rendit les Chinois vertueux, et sa conduite est le plus bel hommage qu'aucun législateur ait rendu à la dignité de l'homme."

Basil Guy : Clerc begins with a brief descrption of China which covers all the ground relating to Chinese antiquity, its origins, the land and its people. Only with part two we find ourselves in the never-never land of blessed intelligence, of enlightened monarchs who can do no wrong beacause they know none, of rational behavious, of filial piety - in a word, the land of Confucius. Clerc begins with the Sage's birth, and in this connection does not hesitate to repeat a few of the legends regarding divine intervention which had been eagerly transmitted by the Jesuits and commented upon, adversely, by the libertines. With the rather detailed account of Confucius's youth, we come upon the first of many pages which will preach to us the excellence and necessity of practicing many of the Sage's precepts. In the third part follows a treatment of eighteenth-century philosophy, religion, transformism, science and natural history ; all seen in a pseudo-Chinese perspective.
