Tragic and comic scenes juxtapose in the play’s structure. Miranda and Ferdinand conform to the Chinese ideals of love and marriage : purity, chastity, and parental consent with celestial blessing. A Chinese audience could also easily identify with this story of calamity, injustice, and revenge. Moreover, the theme of the play was especially topical, concerning as it does a lesson in forgiveness, which mirrored the attitude adopted by the Chinese people towards their former persecutors during the Cultural revolution. |
