The journal Hu bei xue sheng jie, no 2 (1903) emphasized that 'only if we continue to explore the ideas and teachings of scholars such as Rousseau, Montesquieu, Darwin, and Spencer can China hope to have a student population, an academia that is in step with the tides of change, so that it may seek and find a new plan for national salvation and avoid being mired forever in darkness'.
