The ballet is set in China, to Chinese music and with Chinese decorations. It tells the story of Chinese struggle against imperialism : coolies in the Shanghai port, assisted by the crew of a Soviet ship, beat up promiscuous Anglo-Saxon sailors who had assaulted an innocent Chinese bridge.
