Though nearly every one of his plays is realistic in appearance, the basic tone is always romantic. In his plays an inexplicable feeling of poetry is mingled with serious contemplation of life." Xiao Qian, while praising O'Neill for the grit, seriousness and originality displayed in his dramas, stated explicitly that he did not consider the playwright's view of life acceptable and that those with different social and cultural backgrounds should have their own view of life. |
